Cardinals vs. Pirates, May 13
The Cardinals continued to be owned by the Pirates Tuesday, failing to capitalize on a chance to win the game in the ninth inning.
The Redbirds got their lead-off man on in the bottom of the ninth, bunted him over and eventually loaded the bases on walks with two outs before Ryan Ludwick took a mighty hack at the first pitch to pop up and end the inning.
In the top of the 10th, the Pirates got their lead-off man on, bunted him over and eventually loaded the bases before their bullpen broke down and got pummeled by the weak Buckos offense.
Some days you're going to win and some days you're going to lose. But how can you get out-executed by a low budget, inexperienced team like Pittsburgh?
View From the Cheap Seats Cardinals Star of the Game: Troy Glaus hit his second homer of the season to give the Cardinals the lead midway through the contest.
Cardinals Lowlight of the Game: Ron Villone got abused by the Pirates on the day we learned that the guy he has replaced on the St. Louis roster -- Tyler Johnson -- is probably out for the season in need of shoulder surgery. Dishonorable mention, Villone.
The "weak Buckos offense" took advantage of the Cards pitchers leaving balls up in the zone. As a result, lots of flies and line drives to the outfield. They can't do that against ANY Major League squad no matter what the budget is. On the upside, Glaus not only had a good game at the plate, but also came up with good defensive plays. Hopefully the 2 can go hand-in-hand and he can begin to consistently produce, especially with those pesky Rays coming to town.

The Pirates actually have some pretty good hitters--Nady, McLouth, Bay, Sanchez--to go along with very good young pitching.

This is twice within about a week that, after watching the opposing pitcher fall behind every batter and walk the bases loaded with the game on the line, a Cardinal has swung at a first pitch and made a feeble out.
First Izturis, now Ludwick.
The Pittsburgh pitcher is a rookie making his first-ever appearance. He falls behind Miles. He falls behind Ryan. He falls behind Wainwright who's just trying to bunt, for crying out loud. And then Ludwick goes up there hacking at the first pitch. Sheesh.
