Padres may release Edmonds

The pastures in San Diego haven't exactly been greener for former Cardinals fly chaser Jim Edmonds.

Traded to the Padres because he didn't want to see his playing time diminish in St. Louis, one of the best outfielders to ever wield the leather may soon be out of a job altogether. The San Diego press says the Friars, disappointed by Edmonds' .150-ish batting average and on base percentage in the .230 range, could release Jimmy Ballgame as soon as this weekend.

It's a shame because Edmonds, generally adored in St. Louis, has been taking a lot of heat in San Diego because of his diminished play.

Edmonds has always given it his all on the field. But there is only so much to give.

It's too bad Edmonds couldn't have milked two more good seasons -- .290 with 30+ homers and his customary stellar defense -- out of his body. I think he might have received legitimate consideration for the Hall of Fame.

Edmonds gave us the best years of his career, and I will remember him for that. Some of those catches and clutch homeruns!!!! I regret he has diminished but we will have the highlights and memories. Thanks!

Add him to the list of STL CF who should have thier number retired by the Cardinals but will not because they won't make the HOF.

1. Willie McGee
2. Jimmy Ballgame

Jimmy will always be one of my favorite Cardinals.

I think it's a shame that so many people remember him for his last couple of seasons here. None of us can help getting old.

There are a lot of sluggers out there. But there are very few players in the history of the game who have been eight-time gold glove centerfielders who were capable of being clean-up hitters.

Edmonds' name is all over the Cardinals record books despite a relatively short stint in St. Louis. He is a truly special player and the highest compliment I can pay him is that I think he is even better than Willie McGee was.

Willie was a great outfielder. But he wasn't as good as Jimmy. And Willie was a great hitter for average. But Jimmy hit for average and for power.

cardinals best centerfielder ever, loved Mcgee, but not in the same league as Edmonds, good luck JIM

Curt Flood was my favorite, but Edmonds was the best.

edmonds is the best centerfielder to play in st louis..possibly defensely (EXCLUDING CLEMENTE) THE BEST EVER
